Actions that support each other
Internet communication is used to a great extent in projects aimed at both ordinary citizens and professionals.
For example, "the project “Options for sustainable transport” collected information on sustainable transport and alternatives to private motoring at www.kulku.info, as well as links to other web services, for example, public transport route guides. The target group consists especially of young adults and anyone interested in the available transport options.
However, the Internet is not the only means of communication, because people’s ability and willingness to search for information online still varies a great deal.
For example, the interest of forestry professionals and forest owners was raised with a brochure. The next step involved seminars organised throughout the country, with the aim of reaching over 250 forestry professionals in person.

Stories provide perception
In support of communications, the waste industry has adopted storytelling and a cartoon character called Esko, a comfort-loving consumer whose whims get him into all sorts of situations. The stories from Esko’s life illustrate the impact of consumer behaviour on the amount of waste and the climate.
Other materials have also been produced and gathered for the needs of waste guidance and instruction, such as brochures, guides, slide shows, poster series, games and tips on the correct ways of doing things. “Information on its own doesn’t change people’s attitudes or actions. You need an experience or perception that can be evoked, for instance, by a story,” says story trainer Marketta Rentola who instructs waste communicators and advisors.
